The well-known Zharkent mosque is a fusion of the Chinese and Central Asian styles. It was constructed in 1892, as well as the orthodox church. The earthquake of the 1910 destroyed many buildings in Zharkent and Verny (now Almaty) but spared the mosque and the church. The Zharkent mosque is a unique architectural monument. It was built by a Chinese architect Hon Pik. The basic construction material was timber. The skeleton of the mosque make 122 wooden columns fastened together with the system of beams, without any nail. Zharkent Orthodox Church was built and lit in 1899. Church was built under the direction of Nalikin, builders were military. The earthquake of 1910, which destroyed many of the buildings of Vernyi and Zharkent, spared mosque and a church.
