The area of the maximum uplift of Ile Alatau ridge from the highest Talgar peak is called as Talgar node. This section covers not only Talgar peak, but also the adjacent ridges and spurs, tops in these ridges and glaciers, surrounding them.
Talgar node is located in the eastern part of Ile Alatau, in the territory of Almaty State Nature Reserve, one of the oldest nature reserves of the Republic.
Talgar peak has a height of 4973 m. From Ili Valley it looks as a powerful trapezoid, dominating all the surrounding peaks. Vertices, surrounding Talgar peak, seem small and minor compared to this giant. Talgar peak was a good guide for the nomads, traders and travelers in ancient times, walking along the Silk Road. Talgar is clearly visible at a distance of 100 km from the ancient Uzynagash village in the west, and from the modern Kapshagay city in the north.
Talgar peak can be roughly considered as a nodal vertex of Glavnyi ridge of Ile Alatau, linking the gorges of the northern, north-western and south-eastern slopes of Glavnyi ridge. These are Middle, Right Talgar and Zharsay, a tributary of Issyk gorge and Issyk gorge itself on the northern and north-western slopes of the gorge. South-eastern slopes of Ile Alatau are presented by South Issyk gorge and partly South-East Talgar gorge, as well as the left branch of Bogatyr glacier.
Array of Talgar peak consists of three peaks: North Talgar (H-4964), Glavnyi Talgar (Central H-4973) and South Talgar (H-4965). The length of the array of Talgar on the ridge is about 600 m. The highest point of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Khan-Tengri peak (H-6995) is visible from Talgar peak in a good clear weather. The second highest peak – Southeast Talgar (H-4860) is located in immediate vicinity of Talgar peak, in the south below Talgar collapse. In the North-East - peak Metallurg (Н-4600).
The north-western slopes of Talgar node are weakly dissected and have three low and short spur –Abay Kunanbayev, Unnamed and Klyshtau – as well as more extended Severnyi spur. Slopes of Talgar peak have a steep and significant elevation change from the foot to the top, reaching one kilometer. The north-western slope of Northern Talgar is a rock wall up to 900 meters. Route on this wall has the name of Pelevin climber, held it for the first time, and is considered as one of the most difficult routes in Ile Alatau. The western slopes of Glavnaya and South peaks of Talgar and slopes of the ridge between Talgar peak and Metallurg peak are combined rock-snow and ice slopes of great length and steepness. The northern slope of Metallurg top (H-4600), located in close proximity to Talgar peak in Glavnyi spur, is snowy and icy, its slope is to 60ᴼ, in some places is 75ᴼ.
South-eastern side of Talgar peak has reasonably steep slopes, but the length of slopes, elevation and slope make significantly different from the north-west. The south side, facing Talgar collapse, is completely snowy and icy, and has a height of not more than 600 m, and the slope of approximately 45-50ᴼ.
Area of south-eastern slope between Talgar collapse and eastern spur is completely snow-icy with the icefall at the top of the slope. Eastern slope is rocky, it is the end of a very short spur coming from Glavnaya summit. Spur is completely icy on the ridge. The north side of the vertex is a snow-icy circus with slopes of 25-30ᴼ. Two relatively simple and popular routes to the summit run in the south-eastern eastern slope and by the spur of Talgar peak.
Talgar node is the center of the maximum glaciation of Ile Alatau. 46 glaciers are concentrated here with a total area of 128 km2, and among them the largest is Korzhenevskiy glacier. Bogatyr glacier is located in close proximity to Talgar node, on the southern slope of Ile Alatau, the second largest in Ile Alatau. Its modern extension is 9 km and a total area is 30 km2.
The structure of Talgar node includes the tops, located in Glavnyi ridge of Ile Alatau in the south: these are Aktau (H-4686) and Trud (H-4550) peaks. In the western spurs – the vertices of Salanov (H-4240), Chekist (H-4310), Karaulchitau (H-4269), Klyshtau (H-4120), Ushbastau (H-4274), Sulukuz (H-4290), Abay (H-4381), Sportivnaya (H-4117). In the northern spur – the top of Karatau (H-4232), Kolokolnikov (H-4100) and GTO (H-4030).
Two great peaks – Zharsay (H-4580) and Kokbulak (Eighteen, H-4540) are highlighted in Glavnyi spur of Ile Alatau in the composition of Talgar node, extending from Metallurg peak to the east. Glavnyi ridge of Ile Alatau begins to rapidly lose its height below Kokbulak peak and exits from Talgar node. River in Chilik valley merges with Zhangaryk river forming Chilik river after the merger of Southern Issyk and Southeastern Talgar.
"Talgar" All-Union mountaineering camp worked at the foothills from 1935 to 1979, which was destroyed by mudflow. Currently visiting this area is made with the permission of the Directorate of Almaty Reserve.
Also six passes, exceeding the height of 4300 are located in Talgar spur, two of them – the highest and most sophisticated in Ile Alatau.
Talgar node is a harsh world, a dazzling white, impregnable, high and extremely interesting. It always brings a heightened interest among tourists of not only our country, but also foreign visitors.
More information about the gorges and peaks, surrounding the node, is given in the respective descriptions.
