Taldy-I burial ground is located 16 km north of Lesnovka Village, 16,5 km west of Sarybel Village in Panfilov District of Almaty Oblast. Survey of the site was held by Almaty reconnaissance expedition of A.Margulan Institute of Archaeology in 2006. Burial ground is situated in a wide alpine valley bounded with southern slopes of Zhongar Alatau Ridge. The main road connecting valleys of the Usek River and the Burhan River crosses the territory of necropolis.
Burial complex occupies the plane plateau platform of the right bank of the Bolshye Taldy stream in the foothills of the northern slopes of Zhuantobe Mountain. Burial ground consists of 9 barrows of the Early Iron Age and 19 stone fences of the Turkic period,
Barrows are located in the southern and eastern parts of the site. They are stretched to two lines focused with an axis from south-west to north-east. Embankments are made of earth and stone, gentle, fallen, with a stone ring encircling the basis, grass-covered. Diameters vary from 6 to 25 m, height –from 0,2 to 1,5 m. All large barrows are plundered, with extortionate funnels. Construction features, shape of embankments and burial structures attribute the burial ground to the Wu-sun period of the Early Iron Age,
Stone fences of the Turkic period are accumulated in south-western, central and northern parts of the burial ground. The fences are made of large stones slabs, installed vertically and focused with an axis to north-south and west-east. Parameters of the fences vary from 2x3 to 4x3 m. Barrows and fences are spread at distance of 8 – 40 m. Burial complexes of this character are typical for the early stages of the Turkic period (VI-IX cc.) of the Early Middle Ages in Southern Kazakhstan and Jetysu.
Due to the presence of burial grounds of the Early Iron Age consisted (as necropolis Taldy-I) of some tens of barrows let us presume that this certain area of the plateau in the foothills of Zhuantobe Mountain was used by ancient residents of the Wu-sun period as a cemetery. Each burial complex according to parameters of barrows includes burials of different clan’s nobility.
By tradition, this place kept its sacral and ritual importance during the Turkic period.
