Kaiyndy gorge is located 11 km east of Kolsay gorge. An amazing young Kaindy lake is located in this gorge; it’s a popular tourist spot. This reservoir arose after tectonic collapse as a result of the catastrophic earthquake in early twentieth century (1911).
Kaiyndy in Kazakh means "birch". The paradox is that the Kaiyndy Lake is surrounded by a magnificent pine forests. The explanation is simple: the biggest birch grove on the entire Tien Shan is in the gorge below the lake, which gave its name to the gorge, river and lake.
Kaindy Lake lies at an altitude of 1800 m, length is 400 m, and width is about 100m. The maximum depth of the reservoir in 2014 is 21 meters. Water is exceptionally clear and clean, but very cold, just -6 ᴼ C. Despite the low water temperature Kaiyndy lake is popular among divers.
Young forest is an evidence of recent origin of the lake, it grew on the dam of the lake, and trunks of fir trees, still have not rotted in the water. These trunks protruding from the water look like the masts of flooded sailing ships.
As a result of the disastrous Vernyi earthquake that struck in 1911, right slope of Kaiyndy gorge, built of loose limestone, fell down. Stone avalanche fell into the gorge, forming a natural dam. Initially, the water level was much higher, but after the partial erosion of the dam and its breakthrough, the lake took its modern dimensions. A small plateau, also built of limestone, rises on the left slope above the lake. Plateau is planted by young fir trees. Karst processes develop under the trees in the earth; as its evidenced – two small lakes appeared at the northern foot of the plateau are likely to have karst nature. It is possible that fairly large karst cave can be detected in the bowels of the plateau in the future.
If you look at calcareous outcrops on the slopes on closer examination, it can be seen fossilized remains of marine animals that lived in the ancient warm-water sea.
Beautiful landscapes surround the lake. If you climb on the rocky slopes of the ridges of the gorge, amazing panorama of Kaiyndy and Chilic Valley opens.
