It is a small rocky massif in the shape of a triangle - Urban Rocks - and farther in about 100 m Central Asian rocks are located which later became known as Asian rocks. It is on these two rocky objects that since 1948, rock climbing has been generated in Kazakhstan.
Rocks became known as Urban after the first city competitions were held in 1949, and rocks were called Central Asian after inter-republican competitions, where athletes from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan took part, were held there in the same year. Those competitions were traditional till 60-ies of the last century. At the end of the 60s in the winter competitions in climbing triathlon were held there. The program of sports events included cross-country skiing at a distance of three kilometers, skiing down slalom runs on skis and actually rock climbing. Hereinafter, that tradition was forgotten.
At present beginning climbers and climbers who practice rock climbing on natural terrain, and students of the Department of Tourism of several Almaty universities conduct climbing classes on these climbing walls.
