At the exit from the gorge of the Bolshaya Almatinka river at the altitude of 1240 metres in 1977 there was built a 40-meter reinforced concrete mesh dam to protect the city of Almaty. The length of the dam along the crest is 422 metres, and the width of the foundation - more than 200 metres. Eighty-five thousand cubic metres of reinforced concrete and nearly 1 million cubic metres of boulder-pebbly ground were laid in the body of the dam. The cubic capacity of the mudflow storage reservoir is 14.5 million cubic metres.
The construction sustained a large mudflow up to 1 million cubic metres and at a maximum flow rate of 1000 m3 /S, which happened on June 27, 1988. Liquid components of the mudflow at a rate of 30-40 m3 /S dropped along a regulated channel through septic tanks into the foundation ditch of Sayran lake.
