The summit is located in the Azutau spur between Yoshkar-Ola peak in the south and Shkolnik peak in the north. Along its northern slope a small glacier of Abay (# 113) flows down. The western slopes belong to the Maloalmatinskoe gorge, the eastern ones belong to the cirque of the Bogdanovich glacier (# 114). There are two routes to the summit – of the first and second categories of complexity. The peak was named after the great Kazakh philosopher, educator and thinker Abay Kunanbayev. In 1995 the first president of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev ascended the peak.
